Forensic science, or criminal science, is a broad term that includes the scientific and technical approaches used systematically to collect evidence and examine information that leads to understanding the cause of a crime. It is a specialized department focused on providing a team responsible for the investigation of accidents and crimes. It is one of the medical scientific departments at the Technical Institute of Najaf / Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University. This department offers a distinguished educational program that qualifies students, after graduation, to engage in various fields related to forensic and judicial sciences. This is done by preparing individuals with high scientific competence in crime investigation, criminal investigations, fingerprint collection, evidence gathering, handling, and analysis, leading to the identification of perpetrators based on scientific and indisputable methods. It also focuses on preserving evidence at the crime scene, collecting samples, documenting evidence, and understanding how to use modern equipment and techniques in this field, preventing and identifying crimes, and supporting courts and public prosecutors with facts based on forensic evidence.
In this context, and due to the urgent need for this specialization, the Forensic and Judicial Techniques Department was established at the Technical Institute of Najaf according to a letter from Al-Furat Al-Awsat University (number..............), aiming to provide technical staff capable of performing these tasks. The first batch of students was accepted for the academic year 2019–2020.
Preparing a specialized team with high scientific competence in the fields of crime investigation, criminal investigations, fingerprint collection, evidence gathering, handling, and analysis, leading to the identification of perpetrators based on clear and indisputable principles.
Preserving evidence at the crime scene, collecting samples from the site, documenting the evidence, understanding how to handle modern equipment and techniques in the field of specialization, and supporting courts and public prosecutors with fact-based findings.
Providing specialized personnel to work in the field of crime investigation and criminal investigations by equipping students with knowledge and skills related to crime scenes, criminal recording of incidents, how to collect fingerprints, use of forensic photography equipment, methods for examining counterfeit currency and official documents, and using forgery detection tools. Additionally, it includes knowledge of toxicology and drug detection devices, writing related reports, understanding explosives and their types, fire extinguishing tools, and basic first aid principles and their application.
