The Dean of Al-Najaf Polytechnic College, Prof. Dr. Haider Hassan Al-Abdali, chaired the defense committee for a master’s thesis submitted by researcher Zahraa Hassan Imran from the Department of Power Mechanical Engineering Technologies at Al-Musayab Technical College, one of the formations of Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University. The thesis was entitled:

“Enhancing the Performance of a Heat Pipe Using Fins.”

The participation of the Dean of Al-Najaf Polytechnic College in the thesis defense reflects the active scientific presence of academic leaders in supporting postgraduate studies and strengthening specialized research output. It also contributes to developing engineering solutions that serve the industrial and technical sectors while opening new horizons for applying scientific research to address practical challenges.

The thesis aimed to improve the thermal performance of a closed-loop two-phase heat pipe by adding annular fins to the condenser section and investigating the effect of the number of fins on enhancing heat transfer and reducing thermal resistance, using acetone as the working fluid. The study employed both experimental investigation and numerical simulation.

The results demonstrated that adding annular fins to the condenser section significantly improved heat transfer and reduced thermal resistance. The configuration incorporating 10 fins achieved the best performance, recording a reduction in thermal resistance of approximately 57.1% compared with the configuration without fins.

The study indicated the potential application of these findings in several important engineering fields, particularly cooling and air-conditioning systems, cooling of electronic devices and components, waste-heat recovery systems, as well as renewable and solar energy applications. Such applications can contribute to improving system efficiency and supporting research efforts toward more effective and sustainable solutions.

The researcher also recommended further investigations into improving heat pipe performance by examining different fin shapes and numbers, in addition to testing various working fluids and operating conditions. Such research could lead to more efficient designs suitable for a wide range of engineering applications.

This thesis defense highlights the importance of scientific integration among academic institutions and their engineering disciplines, as well as the role of postgraduate studies in producing practical and applicable technological solutions. The participation of Prof. Dr. Haider Hassan Al-Abdali as Chair of the defense committee further underscores the academic and research presence of Al-Najaf Polytechnic College and its commitment to supporting and advancing engineering knowledge in line with technological developments and the evolving needs of the labor market.
