As part of the tourism promotion campaign program held by the Technical Institute-Najaf, the Division of Media and Government Communication at the Najaf Technical Institute organized a scientific symposium entitled “The Role of Media in Documenting and Protecting Antiquities between Awareness and Responsibility” on Tuesday, February 5, in the Scientific Complex Hall, with the attendance of an elite group of academics and those interested in media and heritage affairs. It targeted evening study students from the Department of Health Management Technologies.
The lecturers discussed the importance of the media in documenting the cultural heritage, highlighting the risks facing antiquities, and the role of the media in enhancing community awareness of the need to preserve them as part of the national and historical identity. Professor Nour Al-Huda Mahmoud pointed out that today the citizen in his press bears responsibility for documenting and protecting antiquities and sustaining tourism. Individual interests cannot spoil the civilization of centuries, and here comes the role of the citizen in exposing crimes of aggression against antiquities through the media. The symposium also witnessed interventions and discussions from the attendees on ways to activate the role of the media in protecting archaeological sites, and the need to intensify awareness campaigns, in addition to shedding light on legislation and laws related to the maintenance and protection of heritage.
The Dean of the Institute, Professor Dr. Haider Al-Abdeli, praised the scientific symposium organized by the Media and Government Communication Division on the role of the media in documenting and protecting antiquities. He stressed the importance of the media in enhancing community awareness of the importance of preserving the national heritage, and its role in documenting the cultural legacy for future generations. He also commended the lecturers and participants in the symposium for the valuable information and constructive interventions they provided.
At the end of the symposium, the lecturers stressed the importance of cooperation between media institutions and relevant authorities to preserve antiquities, and the need to involve the media in documentation efforts and promoting cultural heritage, which contributes to protecting it from extinction and encroachment.
