The Accounting Techniques Department at Najaf Technical Institute organized a comprehensive awareness campaign targeting the academic community, particularly youth, to scientifically shed light on the health, social, and economic risks associated with tobacco use through the distribution of brochures, posters, and murals.
The campaign, which was supervised by a group of department faculty members led by the head of the department, Dr. Rabab Adnan Al-Rubaie, and with the active participation of students, utilized visual and audio-visual aids supported by documented scientific data and statistics. Activities included interactive presentations that addressed the biological mechanisms of the effects of nicotine and other harmful substances in tobacco smoke on various body systems, in addition to economic and social analyses demonstrating the burden of smoking on individuals and society. Educational posters were also distributed, including simplified scientific messages and illustrative infographics. In a statement about this initiative, Dean of the Institute, Professor Haider Al-Abdeli, emphasized the importance of adopting scientific approaches to health awareness, commending the efforts of the Accounting Technology Department in providing awareness-raising content supported by facts and figures. He added, “Targeting our academic youth with accurate scientific information about the dangers of smoking is a crucial step toward building a knowledgeable generation capable of making informed decisions to preserve their health and future.”
The campaign aimed to raise students’ scientific awareness about the proven negative effects of smoking on individual health, including an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and respiratory diseases, in addition to its negative effects on reproductive health and cognitive function. It also sought to highlight the social and economic repercussions of smoking, such as increased treatment costs and lost productivity. This campaign is part of the extracurricular activities that the Accounting Technology Department is keen to organize to promote a healthy and safe learning environment and instill a culture of health awareness based on scientific evidence among students.
