Because of the Dean of Najaf Technical Institute, Professor Dr. Haider Al-Abdeli, Najaf Technical Institute organized, as part of its participation in the Najaf International Book Fair in its fourth edition, a symposium entitled “Plastic Art in the Civilization of Mesopotamia”, delivered by Professor Muhannad Al-Fatlawi from the Department of Architectural Design and Decoration, in which he reviewed the history of artistic formation in this strange civilization in the seminar hall of the Najaf Book Fair.
The symposium dealt with the successive periods of the emergence of art in the Mesopotamia region in Iraq, specifically, from the dawn of the dynasties to the Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian and Assyrian civilizations. The works of the lecturer, Professor Al-Fatlawi, explained that art began from epidemics to a grand ambition, a source of pride for the civilizational progress of these societies.
The lecturer also highlighted the distinctive benefits of art in each civilization, as the Sumerians focused on religious symbolism, while the Akkadians were interested in highlighting power in their artwork, while Babylonian art was distinguished by decoration, and the Assyrians were famous for embodying military power in their artwork. The symposium will showcase the most prominent artworks of these civilizations, as well as the pivotal role of plastic art in the civilization of Mesopotamia, as it will move away from global arts and cultures. The conference was moderated by Professor Haider Sabah, who interviewed the lecturer and held a discussion with the attendees, which contributes to the symposium’s contribution to the scientific and cultural value. This symposium comes within the framework of the efforts of the Najaf Technical Institute and under the direction of the Deanship of the Institute to revive the Iraqi cultural heritage and within the campaign to promote tourism for the city of Najaf Ashraf carried out by the Institute and to enhance awareness of the importance of art in the history of civilizations.
