In an important step to confront the increasing challenges of the phenomenon of drug abuse, Najaf Technical Institute and Al-Alamein Institute for Graduate Studies organized a specialized dialogue symposium entitled (Drugs and Psychotropic Substances: Prevention and Control Methods in Iraqi Law), which shed light on the dimensions of this escalating problem and its devastating effects on the individual and society. The symposium brought together an elite group of experts, legal experts and academics to discuss the latest developments in the field of combating drugs, and exchange experiences and ideas on ways to limit the spread of this scourge.
The devastating effects of drug use on physical and psychological health were highlighted, in addition to its social and economic consequences on the individual and society. The experts presented the latest techniques and treatments used in the field of addiction treatment, and emphasized the importance of integration between drug and psychological treatment. The importance of the role of civil society in combating drugs was emphasized, by educating young people about their dangers, supporting prevention and treatment programs, and providing psychological and social support to addicts and their families. The lecturer at the symposium, Dr. Ali Kashif Al-Ghita, Scientific Assistant of the Al-Alamein Institute for Graduate Studies, shed light on the legal aspects related to combating drugs, and stressed the importance of activating existing legislation and developing it to keep pace with developments in this field. Dr. Kashif said in his speech: “Combating drugs requires the combined efforts of all parties, starting from the family and school to government institutions and international organizations. A comprehensive strategy must be adopted that includes prevention, treatment and rehabilitation.” In this regard, the Dean of the Najaf Technical Institute, Dr. Habder Al-Abdeli, stated: (I thank everyone who contributed to the success of this important symposium that shed light on the problem of drugs and its devastating effects on members of our society. Our presentation of various aspects of this dangerous scourge, and ways to address it, represents an important step towards building a more aware and safe society. I extend my sincere thanks to the Al-Alamein Institute for this fruitful partnership, and I emphasize the importance of continuing cooperation between educational institutions to confront the challenges facing our youth.) The symposium was attended by a group of students and professors from the Technical Institute in Najaf, from various departments, which reflects their great interest in this vital topic. At the end of the symposium, it was emphasized the need to intensify efforts to combat the phenomenon of drugs, by providing comprehensive awareness programs, supporting scientific research in the field of addiction treatment, and the cooperation of all concerned parties to confront this dangerous scourge.
