The institute was established as the first educational institution in Al-Najaf Governorate in 1978 in a small building in the city of Kufa with two scientific departments. In 1982, the institute moved to Al-Najaf city on the road between Al-Najaf city and Al-Abu Sakhir district. Over the years, the institute developed, and it now includes 15 departments, 16 branches, and four main specializations (Technological, Administrative, Arts, and Medical).

The institute aims to achieve an advanced position locally, regionally, and within the Arab world, while striving globally to deepen the concepts of technical education in particular and higher education in general among youth and society. The goal is to build an aware foundation for this path of higher education and for those seeking to acquire the best skills and knowledge in technological and administrative specializations. The institute seeks to keep pace with modern scientific developments in technical education programs and to direct scientific research and employ it to serve the community and various projects.

Graduating qualified technical staff in various specializations to meet the demands of the labor market and support the progress of technical development by improving curricula both theoretically and practically, while utilizing the latest teaching methods.

Preparing qualified technical cadres in various technical, administrative, and applied arts fields equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute to the reconstruction process.
